Your Best Marketing Material Is Already on Your Payroll

In expert-led firms, the people are the product. Why executive branding and expert visibility beat another brochure, and what trapped expertise costs you.

Your Best Marketing Material Is Already on Your Payroll
Most expertise is still trapped inside the humans' heads that are in your business.

TL;DR: In expert-led companies, the people are the product. Yet most of their expertise stays trapped in their heads while the company spends on brochures, ads and a company page that sounds like everyone else. Executive branding and expert visibility turn what your people already know into marketing nobody can copy.

If you run a consulting firm, a professional services company or any business built on expertise, I want you to think about something for a minute.

What are you actually selling?

For a lot of B2B companies, the honest answer is: the people. Their judgment. Their experience. The way they think through a client's problem. You can have the best process in the world, but when a buyer signs with you, they're betting on the humans who'll show up.

So here's my question. If your people are the product… why is your marketing all about the logo?

The expertise you're already paying for

You've invested years and a lot of money in your team. You hired smart people, trained them, gave them hard problems to solve and watched them get really, really good.

And most of that expertise never makes it into your marketing.

I say this all the time:

"Most expertise is still trapped inside the humans' heads that are in your business, because they just don't know that what they have in there is content."

The COO who could explain your approach better than any sales deck. The client services lead who knows exactly what buyers worry about. The expert who has been quietly right about your industry for fifteen years. All of that knowledge is doing great work for clients, one conversation at a time. It's just not reaching anyone else. (I dig into why in most expertise is trapped inside human heads.)

What trapped expertise costs you

Trust you have to earn from scratch. Buyers look up your people before they ever talk to your company. When they find nothing, or a profile that hasn't been touched in years, you start the sales conversation further behind than you need to.

Reach you're leaving on the table. People connect with people. In one firm I work with, the COO's posts have reached more than seven times as many people as the company page this year, with a fraction of the followers. (Here's the full story.)

Content that sounds like everyone else. Anyone can generate a post about trends in your industry now. What no competitor can copy is your people's real experience, real opinions and real stories. That's also what search engines and AI tools are increasingly looking for: original expertise from people who've actually done the work.

Talent that stays hidden. Your experts deserve to be recognized for what they know. Visibility builds their confidence and their careers, and it makes your company a place great people want to work.

What executive branding looks like when it's human-led

When I say executive branding, I don't mean polished headshots and a few corporate-sounding posts a month. I mean helping your leaders and experts become known for what they actually know.

It looks like this:

  • Each expert gets a lane: the thing they know better than almost anyone, for the people who need to hear it. Together, the lanes roll up to one brand story. (More in lanes of expertise.)
  • Content starts with a conversation. A recorded interview with each person pulls out their stories and their point of view, so their posts sound like them. (Here's how that works.)
  • The company page stays the home base, and your people become the voices that carry the story further.
  • One conversation feeds many assets: LinkedIn posts, blog posts, newsletters, FAQs, sales talking points and speaking topics.

It's a more human approach to employee advocacy, too. Instead of asking everyone to reshare the same company post, you help each person share what they genuinely know.

Start with one

If this feels like a lot, here's my honest advice: start with one person.

Pick a leader who has something to say and is willing to try. Record a conversation. Get a few weeks of content out into the world. Watch what happens.

In my experience, once a team sees one of their own start getting recognized (the comments, the conversations, the "I saw your post" at the start of a sales call), the rest of the team gets curious fast.

Your best marketing material is already on your payroll. Let's get it out of their heads and in front of the people who need to hear it.

Frequently asked questions

What is executive branding?

Executive branding is how a company's leaders are known publicly for their expertise and point of view. Done well, it builds trust in the leaders and the company at the same time.

Why should a B2B company invest in its people's visibility?

Because buyers trust people more than logos, and in expert-led firms the people are what clients are really buying. Visible experts build trust and reach audiences a company page can't.

What is trapped expertise?

It's knowledge that lives in your experts' heads and gets used with clients but never shows up in your marketing, usually because the experts don't realize what they know is valuable content.

How do I get my experts' knowledge into our marketing?

Start with recorded conversations. An interviewer pulls out stories, opinions and common client questions, and those become posts, blogs and other content in the expert's own voice.

Does this replace our company page?

No. The company page stays your home base. Your experts extend its reach by sharing the same brand story in their own voices.
